Fox News Radio host Guy Benson has revealed that he recently underwent surgery after doctors discovered a cancerous melanoma during a routine skin check. The 40-year-old broadcaster shared the news with listeners on The Guy Benson Show, using his experience to stress the critical importance of early detection.
Benson explained that the melanoma was identified early, which significantly improved his outlook. While acknowledging the seriousness of the diagnosis, he expressed gratitude for the timing and medical care he received. “I went in for a check, they found it, and it turned out to be cancer—an invasive melanoma,” he said on air. “That’s obviously frightening, but it was caught early, which makes all the difference. I’m incredibly thankful—to God, to my doctors, and to everyone who’s supported me over the past few weeks.”
In addition to hosting his nationally syndicated radio program, Benson serves as political editor for the conservative website Townhall and frequently appears as a commentator on Fox News. His announcement marked a rare personal moment in an otherwise politics-focused broadcast.
Benson shared that he took several days off following the procedure but confirmed that no additional treatment is currently required. “This isn’t the same kind of prolonged ordeal many cancer patients face,” he said. “I don’t want to overstate it—but it is now part of my story. In a real sense, I’m a cancer survivor.”
He was clear that his decision to speak publicly was driven by a desire to raise awareness rather than seek sympathy. Benson urged listeners to schedule routine skin examinations, especially those with a family history of skin cancer. “I’m not telling this story for attention,” he said. “I’m telling it because I want people—truly—to get checked. Don’t delay it. Even if it feels inconvenient, that inconvenience is nothing compared to the alternative.”
Reflecting on the experience, Benson described the choice to get examined as life-altering. “That one small decision changed everything for me,” he said. “Because it was caught early, the outcome is a good one.”
By sharing his diagnosis, Benson hopes to encourage greater awareness around melanoma and preventive healthcare. His message underscores how routine medical screenings can play a decisive role in saving lives—and how early action can turn a frightening diagnosis into a hopeful outcome.
